The jig has been a staple of bass fishing since before I was born, but there’s one category of jigs that I’ve become extremely fond of in the past half dozen or so years that doesn’t get a lot of love. They’re called “micro jigs” and while we’ve long had compact versions of flipping jigs and casting jigs, these aren’t just downscaled versions of those staples. They’re a category all their own, and while I carry them in my boat all year long they’re especially valuable in the winter. That’s because they excel in tough conditions, including cold water. Top Five Baits for Winter Finesse Fishing
In my last column, I outlined five of my favorite power fishing lures for winter bass. There are times when power fishing is the deal and you can use baitcasting gear to force the bass to react. This first one probably isn’t much of a surprise if you’ve followed me over […]
The VMC Ned Rig Jig
What we did here is take a good concept and make it better. There’s no question that the Ned rig has taken the bass fishing community by storm. Everyone has a few, and for good reason. They’re easy to fish, you don’t need specialized tackle to fish them, and they catch fish! So we decided to design a head that solved the problems that are inherent with most other Ned rig heads. We named our creation The VMC Ned Rig Jig. It’s different in a number of important ways. Here are the highlights: It has a pointed mushroom head design […]
River Smallies
Going Ike! shot some film recently with Fletcher Shryock on the Upper Susquehanna River. It should be up right now. We were chasing smallmouth, and did we ever catch them. In just five hours we caught 110 bass. That is getting on them. Our approach was pretty simple and straight forward. When we were casting into the current and bringing our lures back with it, we fished a homemade Ned rig. When we were casting with the current and bringing our lures back against it, we fished jerkbaits. I made my Ned rigs with a VMC Finesse Half Moon Jig […]
