In today’s blog, I’m going to talk to you about a technique that I think is going to explode over the next couple of years: mid strolling, or mid-depth strolling. If you’re out there chasing suspended fish and struggling to get them to bite, mid strolling is the technique you need to know. This is a finesse technique designed to trigger those tough, suspended fish into striking, something you can’t always do with traditional baits or methods. I’m excited to dive into the details and give you the inside scoop on what’s been working for me. So, let’s break it […]

March Best Baits
Today I’m going to talk with you about the top four baits for the month of March. You know how it goes, folks. I’m gonna hook you up with two baits for the top half of the country, let’s say from Virginia north, and two for the bottom half, let’s say from Virginia south. But before we dive into those juicy details, let’s talk about March. In most places across the U.S., March marks some phase of the spawn, specifically the pre-spawn in a lot of regions. Remember our chat in February? We discussed fish migrating towards spawning areas from […]
Old School Baits That Never Go Away
I get asked all the time for my recommendation on old school baits that still work today. There are a lot of them around, and I own several of almost every one ever made. Still, I have favorites. In no particular order, here are my top three… The Rapala Original Floating Minnow I don’t really know how old these things are but I can say they’ve been around forever. I had one as one of the first bass fishing lures I ever owned. It caught fish back then, and it’ll catch them now. They come in a lot of sizes. […]
Top Secret! The Spine Rig
Top Secret! The Cat Rig
Our next part of the Top Secret! series of new, fish catching, rigs is called the cat rig. I named it that because when you get done building this baitfish imitating lure it’ll move like a cat — subtle on the fall with just a little shimmy, and it stays perfectly horizontal in the water. Those of you who follow what I do know that’s super important to me. Anything that imitates a baitfish should always be horizontal in the water. It’s weedless, too. Ok, with all that out of the way let’s build one. We’ll start with a list […]
Fish Wake Baits This Spring
Wake baits are seriously underfished. I really don’t know why because they are super good in the early spring and the late fall. The forage is up in the water column. That means the bass are up, too. Wake baits are an obvious choice. My idea of a wake bait is any lure that runs right under the surface on down to about a foot or thereabouts. Hundreds of lures fall into that category, but my favorites are the Rapala DT Fat Crankbait, the Rapala BX Balsa Waking Minnow and the Storm Waking Crank. All three baits give you a […]
My ICAST pick: The Berkley Maxscent
The new things that catch my eye at tackle shows like ICAST and really get my attention aren’t the new colors, sizes or minor modifications to existing baits. Anybody can do that. I’m not saying that those things don’t matter. They do, and they often make an existing product better. But the stuff that’s on the cutting edge of bass fishing is what gets me going. Berkley’s PowerBait Maxscent soft baits are in that category. They’ll be a game-changer. I’m sure of it. You’ll notice I called it a soft bait, not a plastic bait. The reason for that is […]
