All of us love to buy and test new tackle, but in order to maximize your efficiency it’s important to find lures that cover a lot of different situations. What would you say if I told you that there’s one lure that’s more versatile than the rest? No matter what month you’re fishing, what the water clarity might be, or what kind of cover you’re around, I have one lure that I think is more versatile than all the rest. That lure is the soft plastic stickbait. You’ve probably seen them before. It’s just a straight tail worm looking thing. […]

Discussion about fishing lures used to catch bass.
The Best Multi-species Lure of All Time
Even at this stage in my career, after fishing for a living for several decades, sometimes I just want to get bites. I don’t care what it is, as long as there’s lots of action. If you’re a beginner, that may be your goal, too – to just have something pull back. Fortunately, you don’t need a lot of different lures to get that done. In fact, there’s one lure I know that catches everything that swims, and I want to tell you what it is, how to rig it and how to fish it. Once you gain confidence in […]
The Best Rig for Spawning Bass
No matter where in the country you live, at some point during the spring the bass are going to be on the beds. Spawning bass can be really challenging to catch and I know that frustrates some of you, but I’ve got a system and technique that works just about everywhere. It drives them nuts. They’ve got to have it. I’m telling you, if you think that you suck at sight fishing, this is one bait you’ve got to try. There’s already been a lot of chatter about this lure, the soft plastic Berkley Gilly, a dead-on imitation of a […]
Baits for Big Bass
If there’s one question I’m asked over and over it’s this one: “What baits do I recommend for big bass?” Most of the anglers don’t define what they mean by big so I’ll do it. I say that any bass in the 5-pound class or better is big. I know that where and when you’re fishing has a big impact on size but it general that’s a pretty good place to start. A 5-pound bass has some size to it but, at the same time, it’s doable in most waters. After that I group my big bass baits into three […]
The Best Springtime Color
Now, when I think about spring bass fishing I’m thinking about the prespawn, the spawn and the postspawn. Obviously, that’s a very different bite from one stage in the cycle of a bass’ life to another but when it comes to color the best one is exactly the same. And that color is a combo of red and orange! We’ll start by talking about hard baits first. It doesn’t matter what kind of bait you’re throwing it has to be a combo of red and orange. The thing is that as the spring progresses and everything starts to warm up […]
Two Easy Ways to Catch Spring Bass
When I think about spring bass I think about bass that are in transition. They’re moving from winter areas into shallow, spawning areas and then back out again to where they’ll spend the summer. So, the first thing you need to do is find them. After that you need to catch them. I have two basic ways to do those things. Both involve a Tokyo rig, although in very different ways than what you normally hear about. We’ll find them first. You probably don’t think of a Tokyo rig as a search rig. It’s been touted as a great heavy […]
The Excitement Never Ends
The excitement of this industry and bass fishing never ends. I suppose I should say that I’d rather be at Lake Hartwell where the other guys will be fishing the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk. Instead I’m fishing the Kayak Series Championship, and I can’t say I’m totally disappointed about it. This is being written on Tuesday. Competition starts tomorrow. If I finish high enough, I’ll get to the Classic stage on Friday. I’m grateful for that opportunity. Kayak fishing is a part of our sport and I’m proud to be a part of it. […]
Blade Baits: Tackle and Techniques
Last time we reviewed blade baits by looking at the lure in detail. Now we’re going to talk about what tackle to use and how to fish them. For starters let’s review the holes and clips on the back of the lure. It doesn’t make much difference whether you use a clip, a split ring or a swivel on a blade bait. They’ll all work. I like clips and snaps because you can change holes on the fly easy. Split rings are a little harder to take off and put back where you want them, especially with cold fingers. The […]
Blade Baits: The Lure
From some time in the late fall through the early prespawn, a blade bait is one of the most effective lures you can throw. There isn’t much to them, just a chunk of metal and a couple of hooks. But don’t let that fool you. They do get the attention of the bass. My first introduction to them was back when I was a kid. We all had a Silver Buddy or two that we fished with, sometimes from shore but sometimes from a small boat. Back in those days we called it metal fishing. A Silver Buddy was a […]
Colors for Cold Clear Water
Last time we talked about cold muddy water baits and colors. This time we’ll talk about the exact opposite, cold clear water baits and colors. Before we get into that, though, we need to define clear water. In my world it’s water with 10 to 14 inches of visibility. But there’s also ultra-clear water. That’s water with clarity down to 10 feet. The difference between the two is mostly academic. They’re both tough. I deal with both conditions the same way. My colors don’t change regardless of how clear the water is that I’m fishing. I will admit, however, that […]
